Antique Japanese Wooden Chest for Ceramics. A late 19th century Japanese wooden chest for a tea set. It would likely have held Kutani or Satsuma ware. Very few of these appear to have survived so it would make an interesting addition to a Japanese ceramics collection. The interior fits six of each, cups, saucers and side plates and one larger plate.

The top cavity has the cup area and takes fairly shallow cups approx 4.5cm high and 9 to 9.5 cm wide. The larger plate cavity is about 24cm.

The drawers fit the saucers and the side plates, with the saucer side approx 13-13.5cm and the side plate drawer about 18cm. All of the interior fitted areas are in green silk. Well used with exterior having lots of wear, marks and indents.

Interior worn but much better than exterior and serviceable. Hinges are obvious replacements to the lid. See images for general external condition. Width: 40 cm (15 3/4 inch). Height: 34 cm (13 3/8 inch).
