Ainu Patterns and Carving Culture. The Ainu people of northern Japan have a rich tradition of decorative art. Their patterns, often geometric or inspired by nature, were used in clothing and daily tools to protect from evil spirits and express identity. Wood carving was also highly developed, especially in household items and ritual objects, showing both spiritual meaning and great craftsmanship.
