This is a Jaques chess set in its original green cardboard carton dating from around 1900. The St George style of chess pieces named after a London chess club remained popular long after Jaques had introduced its Staunton chessmen in the mid 19th century. Jaques was and is the premier maker of chess sets.
According to the online Chess Museum which has a similar set this is what was known as a playing set. I have included a screenshot from the museums website but there is further information online if you care to look for it. The pieces are carved from boxwood and the black pieces were stained. The Kings stand 71mm tall. The set is intact with no replacements or repairs as far as I can see. The box is worn with some splitting at the corners but still intact with no repairs. The item "Vintage Jaques St George chess set in original box K 71mm" is in sale since Sunday, October 3, 2021. This item is in the category "Toys & Games\Games\Chess\Vintage Chess".
